We have very few options when it comes to internet service at our location. Xfinity was built into our condo and is the only real broadband player at this point. There are mobile options as well with T-Mobile Home Internet, but many people don’t have that option and we didn’t trust it, so we signed up with Xfinity on a 12-month promo for $65 per month in late 2023.
In late 2024, as that promotion came to an end, our cost was slated to go up to $110 per month. I’ve found that most people, including our families, just let this happen and don’t fight it. All it takes is a simple phone call or a simple online chat with a representative of Xfinity where you state you are unwilling to pay the full price and will cancel the service if a new promotion is not found.
I used the chat feature on Xfinity’s website and stated I would be cancelling if a new promotion could not be found. And guess what? They magically found a promotion for another 12 months at $65/month! These companies would rather discount you again than lose your business entirely. You won’t always get the same price, but you can almost always get a much lower price than if you were to do nothing and just let the price go to “normal” levels.
A simple chat with a representative saved us $540 per year.
In late 2025, as our second promotion came to an end, I noticed that Xfinity was starting to offer new customers a 5-year price locked plan for $50/month at the 1 gig speed level. I really wanted to get onto one of those plans so that I didn’t have to haggle via chat/the phone for the next 5 years.
I got back onto a chat and tried hard to get them to give us a similar deal. They wouldn’t budge. Instead, they offered us 12 months at $55/month which was a lower price than we paid the past two years! At $55 per month, we would be saving another $120 per year. I took the win and came up with a backup plan at the same time.
While I told Xfinity we’d take that offer, I also started looking into T-Mobile Home Internet which had come available at our location. They were offering plans starting at $50/month with a 5-year price lock and a 15-day free trial. The speeds were lower, but still plenty fast to stream on multiple devices at the same time. We decided to give them a try simultaneously with our Xfinity internet for those 15 days.
It turns out that T-Mobile Home Internet works great for us, so we locked in the $50 per month price for 5 years and cancelled our internet service with Xfinity which was quite satisfying. Compared to our $55 per month price we had been paying, we saved another $60 Per Year which we have added to our HaggleFund.
We are now in a great position as we would be considered a “New Customer” on Xfinity if we chose to go back to them (you just have to be gone for 3 months), and we can wait for an incredible 5-year price lock promotion from them that beats our current T-Mobile Home Internet price. If that doesn’t happen – we still have another 4 years at our current price with T-Mobile before needing to haggle again! We also hope more competition in our location will pop up in that timeframe, such as Mint Mobile’s MINTernet service which we could get for around $15-30 per month when combining with our Mint Mobile cell phone plans.
If you consider switching to T-Mobile Home Internet, or any similar type of wireless internet, we’d highly recommend utilizing the free trial period first. There are plenty of reviews out there that state certain streaming apps, such as Hulu Live TV, struggle with this service due to how it handles IP addresses. For us – it works perfectly, but if it doesn’t work for you, simply go back to your current provider and threaten to leave. They will almost certainly offer you a better deal to stay!
Summary:
If we’d done nothing: $110/mo ($1,320/yr)
What we pay now (T-Mobile, 5-yr lock): $50/mo ($600/yr)
Total annual savings: $720 — Added to the Haggle Fund
